He was born in Irinopol in Desiatigradia to pious parents, Sergius and Martha. From a young age, he distinguished himself by his zeal for God, rejecting earthly pleasures and taking monastic vows in a desert monastery. After the death of his father, his mother approved of his choice, and he moved to another monastery, where he rebuked the iconoclast abbot. Moving to a relative, Simeon, he spent about fourteen years there, earning respect and veneration. Retreating into solitude, he faced temptations from demons, but, through prayer, overcame them. He received a gracious vision that confirmed his path. The Lord called him to wander for the defense of Orthodoxy against the iconoclasts.
While traveling, he stopped in various places, healing the sick and casting out demons. In Thessalonica, at the monastery of Saint Mina, he lived in poverty but soon became renowned for miracles. Once, he predicted the imminent death of a monk and, after being ordained a priest, served with a contrite heart. Blessed Gregory actively defended Orthodoxy, calling for the veneration of holy icons. His prayers and virtues led to many miracles.
After long wanderings, he fell seriously ill and, praying to God, received healing. In Constantinople, he continued the struggle against iconoclasm, bringing disciples with him. Twelve days before his death, he foretold his departure and passed away on November 20. His relics remained incorrupt, and many received healings by approaching his tomb. Blessed Gregory attained eternal rest in heaven, glorifying God together with the Angels.
