Moving around on Athos
The whole territory of Holy Mount Athos occupies about 325 square kilometers; its length is 60 kilometers long and at certain points reaches up to 12 kilometers in width. In this area there are 20 monasteries, 12 sketes, and about 500 cells and kalyves.
In order to visit several monasteries, to pray and to worship the relics in such a spacious area, it is required to have personal transportation.
Due to the strict rules in force on the territory of the monastic republic, transportation on Athos is quite complicated. The increased flow of pilgrims and those wishing to visit this extraordinary place in recent years has exceeded the capacity of the Holy Mountain in terms of transportation. Athos provides pilgrimage transportation to the capital city of Karyes once a day, with the arrival and departure of a ship from the port of Daphne.
Visiting several monasteries with the available transportation on the Holy Mountain is simply not possible. Of course you can walk, however, in this case you'll visit fewer monasteries, and taking into account the weather conditions and the presence on the mountain of wild animals and snakes, it's better to travel only during daylight hours and only with an experienced guide. It is impossible to rent a car on Mount Athos for independent travel; personal vehicles are also forbidden to enter the territory of the monastic republic.
Athos Transportation Services

- up to 5 hours — 250 euro (this option is only available December through February)
- up to 8 hours — 350 euro
