Athos icons
Miraculous icons of the Mother of God, icons of saints, martyrs and warriors, ancient and modern, painted by famous icon-painters and not made by hands, created on Athos or miraculously arrived here - all these icons represent the spiritual treasury of the monasteries of Holy Mount Athos.
The main purpose of Christian painting is preaching and theology. In the times of early Christianity, this art was originally symbolic and impersonal. Later preaching needed the help of painting in a broader sense; it was then that the first images of the New and Old Testaments, the life of the Mother of God and the saints appeared. Images of Jesus Christ and other saintly persons of Christianity appear starting from the 2nd century.
The existence of miraculous icons is explained by the presence of the saints depicted on them. Of course, the very existence and possibility of manifesting a miracle cannot be explained by science, but by the will of the Lord. In fact, all the icons of Athos are miraculous, since a miracle is not only the healing of diseases and salvation from imminent danger, but also the strengthening of the faith and hope of all those who suffer. God's grace emanates from all icons if a Christian approaches them with a clear conscience.
The miraculous power of icons originates in direct connection with the faces depicted on them. Where there is an icon, there is also the saint depicted on it. According to John of Damascus, God's grace comes to life for believers before each icon. Many icons of Jesus Christ, the Mother of God and other saints worked miracles. That is why subsequently these holy icons of Athos began to be considered miraculous.
Miracles include cures for all sorts of illnesses — usually those that cannot be cured by modern medicine. Icons have repeatedly helped to avert danger, save the cities from invaders, stop various epidemics and convey prophecy. There are cases when icons exuded myrrh, tears and even blood. According to the teaching of the Church Fathers, miracles are performed by depicted saints with the blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ. Each icon, since it is associated with its "prototype", bears the stamp of the blessing of the Holy Spirit and is miraculous, even if it does not directly manifest its miraculous power. Since the Holy Mount Athos is considered the lot of the Mother of God , it is not surprising that the icons depicting the Theotokos have always been treated with special reverence here.
