This icon of Theotokos Theodorovskaya is a copy of the original icon dating back to the 12th century. It is placed on the Hermitage of the Resurrection of Debra, in Kastroma, Russia. The copy kept on Mount Athos is located in the Hermitage of Saint Andrew of the Holy Monastery of Vatopaidi in Karyes.
Her miraculous grace heals the faithful who worship her, she supports them and stands by their side in all difficulties. Besides, the story that accompanies the icon highlights its healing action. According to tradition, Theotokos Theodorovskaya appeared to Prince Basil George of Russia. She even cured the commissioner Ivan Yakovlevich Sovolov, who had been seriously sick for three years.
As far as its iconographic type is concerned, the representation corresponds to the model of Theotokos Glykofilousa. The Virgin Mary holds Jesus in her right hand, while her left hand stands at the height of her chest. Her right palm embraces and holds the Divine Infant that is sitting in her arms. Her gaze is turned towards the faithful, while her cheek rests on the face of her Son. Jesus is turned towards his Blessed Mother. His hands are open and embrace her face. This is a particularly tender representation of the iconographic type. The warmth of the Virgin Mary is vividly demonstrated, as well as the devotion of Jesus Christ, who surrenders himself to her maternal care.
The icon is covered by a relief frame. Apart from the decorative details of the clothing, as well as the individual relief elements adorning the inscriptions, the beauty of the saintly figures is highlighted by the precious stones that surround their halos. Equally luminous are the two stars placed on the figure of the Virgin, as well as the crown on her head.
