The island of Lesbos had long attracted the attention of pirates. It was widely known that the local monastery housed great treasures. While these sacred relics held profound spiritual value for the faithful, rather than material worth, the raiders desired the gold, silver, and precious stones that adorned them.
One of the most ruthless pirates of the 10th century, Sirhan, made the plundering of the monastery his life's ambition. One night, in the darkness and silence of the sea, pirate ships landed near the monastery. At that very moment, the monks were gathered in prayer inside the church. Taking advantage of this condition, the pirates entered the monastery unnoticed and brutally massacred the entire brotherhood.
Gabriel, the youngest novice, was the only survivor, miraculously escaping the slaughter.
Fleeing from the thieves, he climbed onto the roof of one of the monastery buildings. However, the pirates pursued him there.
At that very moment, something extraordinary happened. The rooftop was miraculously transformed into a raging sea, from which Archangel Michael emerged as a mighty warrior, radiant with otherworldly light. Raising his sword against the invaders, he filled them with such overwhelming terror that they fled in panic.
Young Gabriel stood overcome with grief for his murdered brethren, while at the same time trembling in awe before the greatness of the miracle he had witnessed. Inspired by an irresistible desire to preserve the vision of his heavenly protector exactly as he had seen him, he fell to his knees and, through tears, begged the Lord to bless him and grant him the strength to create the Archangel's sacred icon.
Guided by the Divine Grace, Gabriel gathered earth with his own hands and used a sponge to collect the blood of his slain brothers. Mixing the two together, he fashioned a pigment with which he began to model the icon of Archangel Michael. Using only these humble materials, he created the sacred image that has been venerated ever since.
Today, the Holy Monastery of the Taxiarchis on Lesbos welcomes thousands of pilgrims who come to venerate the miraculous icon. The greatest crowds gather on 8 November, the monastery's principal feast celebrating the Synaxis of the Archangels, and on Myrrhbearers Sunday, two weeks after Easter, when countless faithful travel to the island to honor the Saint.
Over the centuries, thousands of miracles have been attributed to the prayers of pilgrims before the holy icon. The countless offerings adorning the sacred image stand as enduring testimonies to God's mercy.
Lesbos is also home to an entire village dedicated to Archangel Michael. In the local church that bears his name, the Archangel's footprints are still preserved on the marble floor. According to local tradition, they were left during another miraculous appearance, when he manifested himself to save a nun from Turkish invaders.
Among their many roles in Orthodox tradition, the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel are also regarded as the heavenly protectors of the Holy Monastery of Docheiariou in Mount Athos.
