Presbyter
Venerable Titus the Wonderworker was a hieromonk at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. He was known for his gentle spirit, his love and affection toward everyone.
Together with him, there lived the deacon Evagrius. They had developed a strong friendship, spending their days in peace and prayer. Yet, at one point, the devil sowed discord between them. They began to feel anger and hatred, avoiding one another—even during the Divine Liturgy. The brethren of the monastery attempted to help them make peace. However, every effort proved in vain.
When Saint Titus fell gravely ill, he became conscious of his sin and began to weep in deep repentance. He then sent a monk to Evagrius to ask for forgiveness. Evagrius, still filled with anger, not only refused to forgive him, but also spoke of him with harsh and dreadful words.
Seeing that Titus was near death, the other monks brought Evagrius by force. Titus fell at his feet and again asked for forgiveness. However, Evagrius turned his gaze away and declared that he had neither the intention nor the need to be make peace with the saint. At these words, Evagrius fell dead, while Titus was healed and stood up in good health.
Later, Titus recounted that during his illness he saw angels mourning for his soul, while demons rejoiced and were filled with satisfaction. Hearing this, the brethren were struck with fear and grieved for Evagrius, recognizing the profound importance of forgiveness.
Saint Titus confessed and was healed of his anger. From that time on, he loved and cared for every monk without ceasing. His holy relics are placed in one of the caves of Kiev.
The saint reposed around the year 1190.
