Gerasim of Euboea, of Athos, disciple of St. Gregory (XIV)
Venerable
He was born in the city of Chalcis on the island of Euboea into a noble Frankish or Italian family, possibly belonging to the royal lineage of the Phacidae. Leaving behind his wealth, he withdrew to Sinai, where he became a disciple of St. Gregory of Sinai. Together with him, he went to Greece and labored on the Holy Mountain.
St. Gerasimus gathered a monastic community and established several hesychasteries, where the monks practiced silence and the prayer of the heart. His disciple was the future Patriarch of Constantinople, Isidore of Vuhir.
Information about St. Gerasimus can be found in the Life of St. Gregory of Sinai, written by Patriarch Callistus I.
