The icon of Theotokos of the Akathist Hymn is also called "Gorgoepikoos", which means the one who fulfills directly all wishes. It was given to the monastery by the wife of the ruler of Hungary in 1643.
Today, it is placed in the Katholikon of the Holy Monastery of Hilandar, in the right part of the iconostasis, next to the south entrance.
In 1837, when the iconostasis was set on fire, the lower part of the icon was seriously damaged. While the fire was still on, the monks chanted the Akathist Hymn to the Blessed Virgin Mary. When the danger subsided, it was decided to give an appropriate name to the icon.
As far as its iconographic type is concerned, it corresponds to its usual representation. Its peculiarity can only be observed in the position of the body of the Divine Infant. In his right hand Jesus Christ holds his Mother's mantle, while in his left hand he holds a scroll, which he rests on his knee. A second difference corresponds to the positioning of his feet, one of which is turned outwards. The lower left corner of the icon was painted in a later period, probably during the 19th century, when the silver frame was also created.
The icon of Theotokos of the Akathist Hymn of the Hilandar Monastery dates from the late 16th to the early 17th century.
