Venerable Sophrony of the Holy Mountain (the Athonite) was born in Epirus to pious parents in the 18th century.
From his early years he was distinguished by a modest life and reverence for holy things.
When he reached marriageable age, his parents, against his will, married him to a virtuous young woman. However, on the night after the wedding, he left everything and went to the Holy Mountain of Athos.
There, in the Skete of Saint Anna, he underwent monastic testing as a novice and was tonsured a monk. Later he was ordained priest and attained great heights of holiness. His life was virtuous and angelic. His spiritual perfection served as an example not only for the brethren of the Skete of Saint Anna, but also for all of Athos.
Having lived a life in holiness and piety, he peacefully departed to the Lord.
