Saint Pitirim, Bishop of Tambov, was born on February 27, 1645 (or 1644) in the city of Vyazma. From a young age, he was endowed with spiritual talent and diligence, which led him to the path of monastic feats. At the age of 21, he was tonsured into monasticism with the name Pitirim and became an igumen. In 1685, Patriarch Joachim ordained him as Bishop of Tambov.
The Tambov diocese suffered from poverty and ignorance. Saint Pitirim actively engaged in enlightening the population, building a stone cathedral and establishing a school for clergy. He dedicated himself to preaching the Word of God and often made journeys throughout the diocese.
The saint sought reconciliation with schismatics and non-believers, demonstrating piety and wise patience. His personal example and gracious words led many to the true faith. In 1690, his sister Ekaterina became the abbess of the Ascension Women’s Monastery.
Saint Pitirim was a diligent prayer, often participating in services and teaching the clergy. He especially venerated the icons of the Savior and the Kazan Mother of God. His walks and reflections took place in the Trigulyaev Monastery, where he founded a monastery.
Saint Pitirim reposed in 1698 at the age of 53. His body was buried in the lower level of the Tambov Cathedral. After his death, the place of his repose began to be venerated, and the number of pilgrims grew each year. In 1914, he was canonized.
