Venerable Nestor the Non-Lettered labored in the Far Caves, leaving behind worldly cares. He diligently served the Lord, not sighing during the divine services, and always sought to think of God. His memory is celebrated on October 27/November 9, likely in honor of his name day with the martyr Nestor of Thessalonica.
Archbishop Anthony of Voronezh recounts the visit of Emperor Alexander I to the Kyiv Caves in 1816. While inspecting the caves, the Emperor was informed about the lives of the saints. When Archimandrite Anthony pointed out the relics of Venerable Nestor the Non-Lettered, the Emperor was surprised that he was non-lettered and noted that he had a pure heart and living faith. The Archimandrite explained that Nestor could not read but was spiritually wise and saw angels.
The name of Venerable Nestor the Non-Lettered is mentioned in the general service of the Venerables of the Far Caves. His memory is also celebrated with the Synaxis of the Fathers of the Far Caves on August 28/September 10 and on the 3rd Sunday of Great Lent.
