Saint Nectarios, the last council-elected elder of Optina, was born in 1853 in the city of Elets, Orlov Province, into a poor family. Orphaned at an early age, he worked for a merchant from the age of 11. At 20, by the blessing of the schemamonk Theoktista, he went to Optina Monastery, where he became a disciple of Elder Amvrosy.
He spent 50 years in Optina, 20 of which were in solitude. Saint Nectarios was endowed with the gift of prophecy and discernment, prayed for Russia, and comforted people in difficult times. He bore the burdens of others' sins and sufferings, was persecuted and exiled, yet continued his ministry.
In 1912, he was elected as an elder, although he initially refused, considering himself unworthy. In his eldership, he exhibited holy foolishness, used dolls to communicate with visitors, predicted the future, and healed the sick. His prayers helped many, and he often spoke about the importance of perseverance in prayer.
After the monastery was closed in 1923, he was arrested and subjected to severe trials. He lived in the village of Kholmishchi in the Bryansk region, where he continued to receive people despite persecution. He died on April 29, 1928, indicating the local cemetery as the place of his burial.
In 1935, his grave was opened, and his body remained incorrupt. In 1989, his relics were discovered, which were recognized as a holy relic. Saint Nectarios was glorified in 2000 for public veneration, and his relics are located in Optina Monastery, where miracles continue to occur through his prayers.
