Saint Milica was the wife of Saint Prince Lazar, who perished in the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, defending the Holy Church from the Muslims. She governed the people until her son Stefan (the High) grew up. In 1393, she took monastic vows at the Zupanovac Monastery under the name Eugenia. When her son left the country in 1402, she continued to rule the state despite her monastic status. Saint Milica cared for widows, welcoming into the monastery women whose husbands had died on the battlefield, and supported the construction of many monasteries and churches. At the end of her life, she accepted the great schema with the name Euphrosinia. After her death, she performed many miracles, and her myrrh-streaming relics healed many the sick. Together with her husband, she provides strength from above and comfort to the suffering Serbia today.
