Bishop
The parents of Saint George, Theodore and Mighefusa, were pious and of noble lineage. In deep old age, they received a son from God, to whom it was foretold that he would become a bishop. George, having reached a perfect age, withdrew to the Syrian mountains, where he accepted monastic tonsure. After the death of the elder who had been guiding him, he went to Vonissa and devoted himself to the harsh struggles of ascetic life. When the bishop of Amastris passed away, George was chosen as the bishop. He was ordained by Patriarch Tarasius in Constantinople and returned to his city, where he established the flock in Divine teaching, increased the church utensils, and defended widows and orphans. The saint performed miracles, including the expulsion of Saracens and the salvation of merchants. Having lived a pious life, he peacefully surrendered his spirit to the Lord on March 3 during the reign of Nicephorus Logothetes.
