Saint Theodore the Sanctified was the son of wealthy parents, yet he sought to draw near to God in every possible way. From his youth, he renounced worldly life and devoted himself entirely to pleasing God. He entered a monastery, where he cultivated wisdom, piety, and humility.
Saint Theodore prayed to meet Saint Pachomius, which he achieved after long supplications. He joined the great elder and lived under his guidance, faithfully following the monastic rule. Saint Pachomius foretold that Theodore would become a model of virtue and an example for all monks.
The latter often prayed for divine clarity and guidance. His elder encouraged his zeal and guided him in the pursuit of the spiritual life he so deeply desired. Saint Theodore was strict with himself, concealing his illnesses and the severity of his fasting. He also remained detached from family ties.
When his mother came seeking to see him, Theodore refused, fearing that he might feel for her a greater love than his love for God. Saint Pachomius, understanding his disciple’s inner struggle, did not insist. Instead, he advised him to comfort his mother by waving to her from a distance, which Theodore humbly did.
Saint Theodore also cared deeply for his monastic brethren, helping them with their spiritual needs and consoling them in the trials of ascetic life. He served as an assistant to his elder, managing the affairs of the monasteries and preaching the word of the Gospel. After the deaths of Saint Pachomius and of his successor, Theodore continued to guide the brotherhood on the path of salvation.
He reposed twenty years after his elder’s death.
