Saint Alexander was born in Asia. He received his basic education and studied in Constantinople. He later abandoned military service and decided to become a monk, dedicating his life to the Lord.
He spent four years in strict obedience at a monastery. Later, he left the community and went into the desert, taking with him only the Gospel. He lived there for seven years. He began preaching the word of the Gospel to the pagans, converting the local governor to Christianity. Eventually, all the inhabitants accepted baptism. They burned their idols and believed in the grace of the true God.
The saint returned to the desert, where he preached to a group of robbers. They repented and founded a new monastery. Soon, more and more monks and ascetics began to gather around him.
He governed for twenty years the monastery that had been founded. He then traveled with the brethren to various cities, preaching the Gospel. In Antioch, he built a church and a hospital. However, facing the envy of people, he was forced to leave for Constantinople, where he founded another monastery and continued his ministry.
Saint Alexander, together with the other monks, suffered because of the heresy of Nestorius.
In the end, he spent the last years of his life in the monastery he had founded, until he died at a very advanced age, after fifty years of monastic struggles.
