The miraculous icon of Saint Stephen, the First Martyr, is located on the southeastern column of the Katholikon of the Holy Monastery of Konstamonitou. According to tradition, it dates back to the iconoclastic period. Written sources of the monastery (manuscripts of the 17th century and records of 1844) place its creation during this period. They also speak of the miraculous rescue from a fire that broke out. At the bottom of the icon, we can still notice the damage from the terrible event. As it is known, it was miraculously found in the monastery. It came from Jerusalem during the reign of the Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118). It was placed in the monastery's Katholikon when Hilarion was the first chancellor of Mount Athos.
Saint Stephen is depicted in frontal view. There are two inscriptions on the gilded frame. In the upper part of the icon we read "Saint Stephen the First Martyr" and in the lower part "Gift of Archimandrite Filaret 1864, Moscow".
The saint wears deacon's vestments. In his right hand he holds a censer, while in his left hand he holds a temple-shaped box. According to the stylistic characteristics, the icon of Saint Stephen is considered to have been created by the same hagiographer who created the icon of Theotokos of the Holy Monastery of Konstamonitou.
