The icon of the Virgin Mary, characterized as "The One Rescued from the Fire", took its name from the corresponding miracle that was performed. According to the tradition, Turkish conquerors threw the icon into the fire to destroy it. It was, however, miraculously saved, along with the wooden carved frame that surrounded it.
The icon follows the iconographic type of Theotokos Hodegetria. She holds Jesus in her left hand, while with her right hand she blesses the faithful. Although its morphological features are slightly indistinguishable due to degeneration, nevertheless scholars place the icon safely in the 17th century.
The carving surrounding consists of two columns, to the right and to the left of the icon, which support the lower rectangular frame and underpin the upper part. At the bottom of the icon there is an inscription referring to the miracle. In the upper part there are two angels holding an open scroll with the inscription “Our Mistress, bind up the prayers of your servants and deliver us from every need and affliction”.
