A candle is a sacrifice we offer to God. In ancient times, even in the pre-Christian era, the fat of sacrificial animals was offered as a gift to the gods. In Christianity, more precisely in the Orthodox religion, the candle has a slightly different meaning: it symbolizes Light.
The holy fathers liken the melting of the candle to the melting of sins before the face of God. As the lighted candle melts giving its light to God, so our sins, for which we light the candle in the temple, melt with it.
For the first time the Athos Guide Charitable Foundation offers the opportunity to light a candle on Mount Athos. Now you don't have to go to the Holy Mountain yourself to do this. You can choose a monastery and a shrine before which you would like to light a candle, and the monks will do it for you or your loved ones with prayer.
Memorials
Types of commemorations available on our website:
- One-time — a candle will be lit once;
- Weekly — lighting candles for 7 days;
- Forty days' prayers — monks will light candles before the shrine of your choice for 40 days.
You can light candles for on health or repose of your family and friends.
Prayers to miraculous icons
A prayer service is served every day in front of the miraculous icons of the monasteries, such as the Mother of God "Herondissa" of Pantokratoros Monastery, the icon of Saint Panteleimon of the skete of St. Panteleimon and others, during which the names you have submitted will be commemorated.
Prayers to the shrines of the monasteries — commemorations of the names you have submitted before the main shrines of Athos monasteries, such as the Cincture of the Theotokos of Vatopaidi Monastery, etc.
Light your candle on Athos, and may this gift be accepted by God!
