The holy prophet Zechariah, the sickle-bearer, was of the Levitical tribe, the son of Barachiah and the grandson of Addo. He was called to prophetic ministry in the second month of the second year of the reign of Darius the Persian, just two months after the prophet Haggai. The prophets Haggai and Zechariah inspired the Jews to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem, which was constructed after their return from Babylonian captivity.
Zechariah's prophetic activity includes eight visions that explain God's protection over the people. His book contains messianic prophecies predicting the coming of the Savior and the restoration of Jerusalem. The prophet also warns about the sins of the people and predicts their punishment, as well as the future kingdom of the Messiah, which will be a kingdom of peace.
In his speeches, Zechariah teaches that fasting should be accompanied by deeds of righteousness and love for one’s neighbor. He predicts the destruction of Israel's enemies and the coming of the righteous King, who will bring salvation to the people. In his last speech, the prophet proclaims the protection of Jerusalem from enemies and that the Lord will pour out the spirit of grace upon the people who will mourn for the One whom they have pierced.
Tradition says that the holy prophet Zechariah lived to a great old age and was buried near Jerusalem, alongside the prophet Haggai. His legacy is the book containing prophetic visions and speeches, which are read in the church on special days.
