Saint Martyr Basil (Vasilij Vasil'evič Izmailov) was born on June 4, 1885, in the city of Vyshny Volochok, Tver Province. He graduated from the Minsk Theological Seminary in 1905 and the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy in 1910. He served as a priest in the Pokrov Church in the village of Sloboda-Ozeritskaya. In 1927, he was appointed the rector of the Holy Resurrection Cathedral in the city of Borisov, but on June 2, 1927, he was arrested. He was accused of making anti-Soviet statements and calls to defend the Church. During the interrogation, he did not confess to the charges. On August 26, 1927, he was sentenced to three years of imprisonment in the Solovetsky concentration camp. He passed away on February 22, 1930, in the camp and was buried in an unmarked grave.
