Saint Stephen Uroš was the son of the Serbian king Stephen Dušan, who united the Serbian lands and proclaimed himself king of the Serbs and Greeks. Uroš was born in 1337 and was crowned with the royal crown in 1346 at the age of ten. After his father's death in 1355, he became king at the age of eighteen, but faced difficulties in governing the vast state, as the nobles who had gained power from his father began to act independently. Uroš was distinguished by his gentle soul and simplicity, but he lacked the strength to keep the nobles in obedience. As a result, his authority was undermined, and especially King Vukašin sought to eliminate him. During a hunt, Vukašin treacherously killed Uroš, and his body was secretly buried in the Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos. Uroš's mother and wife, Elena and Anna, mourned him bitterly, and soon the secret of his death became known. The relics of the saint rested in the temple for a long time and were later transferred to the Monastery of Jazak in Austrian Srem. Saint Stephen Uroš built the Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Skopje and was glorified as a saint who cared for widows and orphans, reconciled disputes, and protected the oppressed.
