In 2003, a large exhibition of icons took place in Athens, where the icon of Sophia, painted by the iconographer Dimitri Khadzhiaopostol, attracted special attention. After the exhibition, it was presented in Moscow, and the image of Sophia became a symbol for posters and brochures. The name of the saint was included in the calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church on June 7, 2012, and her memory is celebrated on April 23 (May 6).
The Monastery of the Mother of God, where Sophia labored, is located between the villages of Variko and Klisuri on the eastern slopes of Mount Muriki. Its patronal feast is celebrated on September 8. The current appearance of the monastery was formed in the late 17th – early 18th century, although the church, built by the founder and hieromonk Isaiah, stands on a more ancient foundation from the 14th or 15th century.
Sophia was born in the rural area of the Ardasi region of the Trebizond metropolis in Pontus. She was beautiful, with brown eyes and light hair, which she braided. Her parents married her off late, but her husband died in military camps, which prompted Sophia to deep repentance and asceticism.
Sophia began her ascetic life in Pontus, where, during persecutions, Saint George appeared to her and warned her of the impending danger. Later, returning to Greece as a refugee, she survived a severe storm, but everyone was saved thanks to her prayers.
In the monastery, she lived in modest conditions, often spending nights on her knees by the hearth. Her clothing was poor, and she did not care about her appearance. Sophia ate simple food and shared everything she had with those in need.
Sophia had the gift of foresight and often predicted the arrival of pilgrims, knowing their names and needs. She cared for unmarried girls, helping them find worthy suitors. Her life was full of patience and humility, and she never judged others.
Shortly before her death, she predicted the troubles that would befall her people. She died on May 6, 1974, at the age of 88. Her relics were discovered in 1982, and since then they have exuded fragrance. Many people keep her holy garments and icons, receiving help and comfort from her in prayers.
