Semion Ivanovich Afonkin was born on February 13, 1870, in the village of Obrocheno, Krosnoslobodsky district of Penza province. His father, Simeon, was a priest in the city of Kaskelen in Kazakhstan, where he honorably fulfilled the pastoral ministry. In 1937, he was arrested and accused of spreading anti-Soviet propaganda and religious beliefs. Father Simeon did not acknowledge his guilt. The troika of the NKVD for the Alma-Ata region sentenced him to the highest measure of punishment. On December 8, 1937, he was shot.
