Saint Sergius was born on September 16, 1895, in the family of priest Peter Mikhailovich Lebedev in the village of Salkovo, Podolsk district of Moscow province. In 1910, he graduated from the Don Spiritual School, and in 1916 — from the Moscow Spiritual Seminary. After military mobilization into the army, in 1920 he was ordained a priest and began serving in the Ascension Church in the village of Altufyevo. In 1929, his father was assigned a kulak status, but the property was returned.
In 1937, mass repressions began, and Father Sergius was arrested on January 19, 1938. He was imprisoned in Taganka prison, where he underwent interrogation. On January 26, 1938, the NKVD troika sentenced him to execution, and he was shot on January 31 at the Butovo firing range, buried in an unmarked grave.
In August 1938, some NKVD employees were arrested for illegal methods of investigation, and the investigator handling Father Sergius's case committed suicide.
