Hieromartyr Sergius was born on September 16, 1895, in the family of the priest Peter Mikhailovich Lebedev, in the village of Salkovo, Podolsk uyezd, Moscow Governorate. In 1910 he graduated from the Don Theological School, and in 1916 from the Moscow Theological Seminary. In 1920 he was ordained to the priesthood and began serving in the Exaltation of the Cross Church in the village of Altufyevo. In 1929 his father was labeled a kulak, but the property was returned.
In 1937 mass repressions began, and Father Sergius was arrested on January 19, 1938. He was imprisoned in Taganka Prison, where he was interrogated. He was questioned for two days without interruption, as they tried to extract a confession of counterrevolutionary activity. On January 26, 1938, an NKVD troika sentenced him to execution by shooting. Father Sergius was shot on January 31 at the Butovo firing range and buried in an unknown grave.
In August 1938, some NKVD employees were arrested for illegal methods of investigation, and the investigator who handled Father Sergius’s case took his own life.
