Saint Sergius of Gortin was born on March 10, 1889, in Ryazan. He was ordained a deacon in 1916 and served in various churches, including those in the villages of Bogoyavlenskoye and Malkovo. In 1920, he was ordained a priest.

During the same decade, amid the authority's efforts to separate Church and state, he emphasized the importance of the religious blessing of marriage. As a result, he was arrested and exiled to Voronezh.

In 1930, he was arrested again and accused of anti-Soviet propaganda. Refusing to admit the charges, he was sentenced to death. On August 2, 1930, he and his fellow defendants were executed.
