Saint Sergius was born on February 3, 1879, in the village of Semenovka, Samara province. In 1900, he entered as a novice in the Holy Danilov Monastery in Moscow, where on May 15, 1910, he was tonsured into the mantle with the name Sergius. In 1911, he was ordained as hierodeacon, and in 1915 – as hieromonk. In 1920, he was awarded the pectoral cross, and in 1923, he was elevated to the rank of igumen. He served in the Trinity Cathedral and the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God of the Danilov Monastery, and after their closure – in the Church of the Resurrection of Christ.
In December 1930, mass arrests of the clergy began. On February 8, 1931, Igumen Sergius was sentenced to three years of exile in the Northern region. He was first sent to Arkhangelsk, then to Pinega and the village of Kuloy, where he lived until the end of his exile.
On February 28, 1934, he returned to Moscow, but was not allowed to live there, and settled in Kashira. He was later appointed to serve in the Nikolsk Church in the village of Nikolskoye-Golovinskoye. He served until the mass arrests of 1937.
On November 24 and 25, 1937, former chairmen of the village council testified against him. On December 1, 1937, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Volotskaya prison. On December 3, the NKVD troika sentenced him to ten years of imprisonment in a labor camp. On February 5, 1938, he arrived at the camp in the Amur region, then was transferred to the Bushuyskiy and Svobodnenskiy camps. Saint Sergius passed away on November 9, 1942, in the Svobodnenskiy labor camp and was buried in an unmarked grave. His memory is celebrated on October 27 (November 9).
