Saint Paul the Simple was a farmer who married a beautiful but wicked woman who led an adulterous life. Upon discovering her infidelity, he decided to become a monk and went into the desert, where he met Saint Anthony the Great. Anthony, seeing his age, initially did not want to accept him, but upon seeing Paul's persistence, agreed to take him in, giving him trials in patience and obedience.
Paul showed great patience, following all of Anthony's instructions, even when his efforts were deemed insufficient. Eventually, Anthony recognized him as ready for monastic life and built a cell for him. Paul became known for his miracles, including the expulsion of unclean spirits.
One day, when a young man possessed by an unclean spirit was brought to Anthony, he directed him to Paul, who, after praying, cast out the demon, demonstrating the power of humility and simplicity. Paul also possessed the gift of discernment, seeing the spiritual state of people.
Saint Paul lived many years in holy simplicity, performing miracles, and departed to the Lord, becoming the wisest in heaven. His life teaches that true wisdom lies in the fear of God and serving Him with a pure heart.
