Ηegumen / Abbot
Saint Nicholas (born Nikolai Vasilievich Saltikov) was born on July 12, 1884, in the village of Grigorievo, in the Tver province. His father, Vasily Saltikov, was engaged in shoemaking. Nicholas completed his education at a rural community school, while in 1902 he entered the Nikolo-Pesnosky Monastery, where he remained for fourteen years, living in obedience and serving his brethren. In 1916, he was tonsured a monk and a deacon. In 1919 he was elevated to the rank of hieromonk.
After the monastery was closed by the authorities, the saint moved among the villages of Dyakovo, Sukovolo, Semenovskoye, Ivanovskoye, and to the Church of the Transfiguration in the village of Venderiny, striving in every way to continue serving the Church.
In 1937, he was arrested and got imprisoned in Moscow. During the interrogations, he courageously declared that he had taken no part in any counter-revolutionary activity and that he was innocent.
Nevertheless, on December 9, he was sentenced to death and executed one day later.
