Holy Мartyr Mercurius of Smolensk
Martyr
In the early 13th century, the Russian land was subjected to an invasion by the Tatars, which led to great suffering and the death of many people. Smolensk found itself under the threat of devastation, and the inhabitants, relying on the protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, began to fervently pray for salvation.
At that time, Saint Mercury lived in Smolensk, a warrior distinguished by his strength and pious life. Upon learning of the approaching enemies, he burned with the desire to suffer for the faith of Christ. His prayer was heard: the Most Holy Theotokos called him to defend the city.
Saint Mercury, having received instruction from the Theotokos, went to meet the enemies. In battle, he achieved victory over the Tatar commander and many other foes, thanks to the help of the Most Holy Theotokos. However, at the end of the battle, he was mortally wounded.
The citizens of Smolensk, witnessing the miraculous intercession, honorably buried Saint Mercury in the cathedral of the Most Holy Theotokos. After his death, he appeared to the sacristan and instructed him to hang his weapon above the grave in memory of his feat.
The relics of Saint Mercury now rest in the Smolensk Avraamiev Monastery, where he grants healing and assistance to all who call upon him for help.
