The Venerable Mar, in his youth, was distinguished by his beautiful appearance and good voice, performing the duties of a singer during the feasts of the holy martyrs. He loved God and faithfully observed His commandments, keeping his body in virgin innocence and his soul in purity. Retreating to the village of Omiru, he built himself a hut, in which he spent thirty-seven years, suffering from dampness but unwilling to leave it. The Venerable was characterized by simplicity, considered poverty to be the greatest wealth, and having lived for ninety years, was content with garments made of goat's hair and a little bread with salt. He longed to be present at the Divine Liturgy, and when the priest performed this great Mystery, his soul was filled with ineffable sweetness. The Venerable peacefully surrendered his spirit to God and now rejoices in the eternal abodes.
