Archbishop
Saint Ioannikios was born to devout parents. From his youth, he decided to abandon the world and embrace an ascetic life. He became a disciple of Saint Savvas II, by whose blessing he was ordained deacon and later priest. After returning to Mount Athos, he labored in strict asceticism and fasting, enduring every hardship and humiliation.
With the blessing of Saint Savvas, Saint Ioannikios returned to Athos, became the steward of the Holy Monastery of Chilandari and later its abbot. He managed all issues of the monastic community during difficult times, always remaining faithful to his ascetic ideal and to prayer. He was an example of love toward his brethren and a source of hope for the poor. By order of King Ourosas, he was appointed abbot of the Monastery of Studenitsa.
After the death of Saint Savvas, he was elected Archbishop of Serbia. Under his leadership, Serbia began to restore peace. Soon, however, new turmoil arose, leading to the king’s exile. Saint Ioannikios followed him, while shortly thereafter surrendered his spirit. His holy relics were brought back to Serbia, where they were placed incorrupt in the Monastery of Sopochani.
The memory of Saint Ioannikios is commemorated on the 28th of May. He is also honored on the 30th of August, together with the commemoration of other saints and teachers of the Serbian Church.
