Saint John Yakovlev was born on November 11, 1866, in a peasant family in the village of Novogorlykskoye, Stavropol Province. He served in the Nikolaev Church of the city of Yeysk, in the Theological Church of the stanitsa Novonikolaevskaya, in the Danilov Church of Stavropol, and in the Dmitriev Church of Yekaterinodar. He taught the Law of God at the Yekaterinodar Eparchial Women's School. He was appointed as a representative of the clergy in the Yekaterinodar City Duma. He had four children.
He was arrested on September 16, 1921, for correspondence with exiled priests. The entire parish of the Dmitriev Church of Krasnodar rose in defense of Father John. The faithful sent a letter in defense of their pastor, emphasizing his good attitude towards people and his spiritual guidance. On September 23, 1921, the troika issued a decision on the highest measure of punishment. On September 28, Father John was shot and buried in Krasnodar in an unknown grave.
