Venerable Elias the Hermit, of Egypt
Venerable
Saint Elijah entered monastic life from a young age and spent seventy-five years in solitude in the desert near Antinoe of Thebaid. He did not leave his mountain, where he lived in a cave, and his age exceeded one hundred and ten years.
The elder ate modestly: three pieces of bread in the morning and evening and three salted olives. In his youth, he ate only once a week. Elijah taught those who came to him: "Do not surrender yourselves to the power of Satan. There are three manifestations of the devil's strength: forgetfulness, laziness, and lust. If a monk is attentive and has the fear of God, he will be saved by God's grace."
Saint Elijah departed to the Lord in deep old age, exemplifying the true monastic life.
