Archbishop
Gury Rugotin, a saint, the first Archbishop of Kazan, was born into a noble family in the town of Radonezh, and in the world was named Grigory. In his youth, he served Prince Ivan Penkov, but after a false accusation, he was imprisoned for two years. After his release, he renounced the world and became a monk, taking the name Gury. In 1522, he was appointed as igumen, and in 1555, he was consecrated as Archbishop of the Kazan diocese. He established educational monasteries, constructed a cathedral in honor of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, and converted many Muslims to the Christian faith. He died on December 4, 1563, having received the schema two days before his death. His relics were discovered on October 4, 1595, and rest in the Kazan Annunciation Cathedral, transferred to a silver reliquary in 1817.
