Saint Theogenes the Hieromartyr was bishop of the city of Parium in the early 4th century. During the reign of the Emperor Licinius, the tribune Zelikynthios arrested him, attempting to persuade him to abandon his sacred office and renounce Christ. After the saint’s refusal, he was subjected to terrible tortures and imprisonment.
He was ultimately condemned to death by drowning. Before his execution, he asked for time to pray. During his prayer, he was surrounded by an extraordinary light, which led many of the sailors and soldiers present at the execution to believe in the Lord.
Nevertheless, the saint was cast into the sea, where he completed his life in martyrdom in 320 AD. His body was retrieved by faithful Christians and buried near the walls of the city. Through the grace of his holy relics, numerous miraculous healings began to occur.
