Saint Theodosius, Archbishop of Chernigov, came from the noble family of Uglich. His father, Nikita, was a priest, and his mother, Maria. From a young age, he was raised in piety and sought God. After receiving an education at the Kiev-Brothers' Epiphany School, he deepened his study of the Holy Scriptures and the writings of the Holy Fathers, striving to imitate the lives of the venerable Anthony and Theodosius.
After accepting monasticism in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, Saint Theodosius became a renowned ascetic. His humility and virtuous life attracted the attention of Metropolitan Dionysius, who appointed him archdeacon of the Kiev-Sophia Cathedral. However, seeking solitude, he left Kiev and settled in the Krupitsky Monastery, where he was ordained as a hieromonk.
Soon, Saint Theodosius was appointed abbot of the Korsun Monastery, and later the rector of the Kiev-Vydubitsky Monastery, where he restored the community and organized the services. His labor and ascetic life attracted many monks, and he founded a skete for those seeking solitude.
After the death of Metropolitan Lazar Baranovich, Saint Theodosius was elected Archbishop of Chernigov. He cared for the well-being of his flock, restoring churches and strengthening the clergy. Saint Theodosius founded new monasteries and actively opposed the Uniates, strengthening Orthodoxy in Little Russia.
The saint reposed on February 5, 1696, and was buried in the Chernigov Borisoglebsky Cathedral. After his death, miracles began to occur related to his intercessory prayers. His relics were found incorrupt on February 14, 1772, and since then, Saint Theodosius has been venerated as a miracle worker.
The solemn opening of his relics took place on September 9, 1896, attracting many pilgrims and marking the beginning of his veneration as a saint. Saint Theodosius is known as a protector from troubles and afflictions, and his prayers continue to heal the suffering.
