Saint Alexander was born in 1876 in Moscow into a priest's family. After graduating from the Moscow Theological Academy in 1900, he was appointed as a teacher and served in the Trinity Church in Samotek. In 1923, refusing to recognize the Renovationists, he was arrested and imprisoned in Butyrka prison, where he was accused of anti-Soviet agitation. On September 22, 1923, he was released, but in 1924 he was appointed to serve in the Church of the Holy Sorrows. In 1937, following a denunciation, he was arrested again and sentenced to execution. Priest Alexander Levitsky was shot on October 9, 1937, and buried in an unmarked grave at the Butovo firing range.
