Submit a memorial note: Holy Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Patras

In the south of the Greek city of Patras, not far from the place of the martyrdom of the Apostle Andrew, there are two cathedrals dedicated to the holy Apostle, who is also the patron saint of the city. One of them, more recent, is the largest cathedral in Greece and a symbol of Patras. The old cathedral is built on the site of another one, which was erected in the late 5th century and was an important pilgrimage center.

Nowadays, both the old and the new cathedrals are united by one territory. The great relics of the Christian world are kept here:

• The Honorable Head of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called.
• Particles of the Cross on which the Apostle was crucified.
• The tomb of St. Andrew, the only apostolic tomb located in Greece.

The Feast Days of the cathedral of Saint Andrew in Patras are November 30, the Sunday closest to September 26 (commemoration of the return of the Honorable Head of the Apostle Andrew), and the Sunday closest to January 18 (commemoration of the return of the Holy Cross).

After the crucifixion, the Apostle Andrew was buried near the place of his martyrdom. Today, his tomb is located on the territory of the Cathedral of Andrew the Apostle and is the only apostolic tomb in Greece.

Here, in the new cathedral, the Venerable Head of the saint and particles of the Cross on which he was crucified are preserved. Archaeological studies have confirmed that the Cross fragments are indeed made of olive wood and date back to the 1st century. The Cross of Saint Apostle Andrew is a source of many miracles and healings.

Every day, hundreds of Christians come to venerate the sacred relics and pray for the intercession of the saint in healing from various diseases and overcoming life's difficulties.
