Holy Archangels Cell Commemorations

The cell of the Holy Archangels of the Hilandar Monastery is located in the capital of Athos, Karyes. It is located in a vast territory which in the thirteenth century was acquired from the Protos (the head monk) of the Holy Mountain by St. Sava, the founder of the Hilandar monastery. Historical records, mainly the debentures of the holy cell, date back to the 17th century and later.

The patron and protector of the cell, Michael the archangel, is a guide and spiritual counselor for the monks in the fulfillment of the Divine Will. As can be seen from the many miracles manifested by him, Michael the Archangel acts as a protector of all who have been wronged by bad people; by those who like evil. A striking example of this is the miracle of St. Michael at Chonae, the Feast of which is celebrated on September 6. "Wherever the grace of the Archangels overshadows, thence the devil is banished." Thus, Michael the Archangel fights against the dark forces when people are offended by them and appeal to his grace.

We desire that through the intercession of the Blessed Mother of God and Michael the Archangel, people of faith will remain steadfast in their faith and in the fulfillment of the Gospel commandments.

To the Archangel Michael and the Heavenly Host

It is well known that Michael the Archangel is the leader of the Heavenly Host. Therefore, believers pray before his icon not only to the Archangel himself, but also to all the Incorporeal Heavenly Forces.

Each archangel has its own special ability: Raphael heals, Michael protects. Gabriel is asked for help in various matters, although he is most often called upon when there are problems with conception. Uriel is prayed for deliverance from sins, and Selaphiel for strength in faith. Jegudiel is prayed for help with work issues, Barachiel - for protection of family happiness and prosperity, and archangel Jerahmeel is prayed for the souls of the deceased, for repentance and guidance.

The Archangel Michael is among those closest to the Lord; that is why the prayers addressed to him are so powerful.

What do we pray the Archangel Michael for?

  • Protection from evil;
  • Protection from troubles, enemies and other adversities;
  • Protection of relatives, loved ones, children, and all those in need;
  • Fair resolution of difficult situations;
  • Protection from temptations and devil's intrigues.

Every day the monks read the notes on health and repose submitted by the believers, and light candles. During these services, the brethren pray for all of Christendom.
