In the original Greek Gospel text, the myrrh is designated by the word "μύρον". This word can be translated not only as "myrrh", but also in a broader sense as "incense". In the Gospel according to John (12:3) it is said: "Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment". And so, this Athos oil made from spikenard is also a myrrh.
Christians anoint their foreheads and sore spots crosswise with the spikenard myrrh to heal physical and spiritual ailments. It is believed that it protects from misfortune. Therefore, it is very important to have spikenard oil in your home as a symbol of the grace and love of our Lord.
