Holy Archangels Kalyve Commemorations
The kalyve of the Holy Archangels is located in the region of Kapsala, near the Athonite capital of Karyes. According to the Constitutional Charter of the Holy Mountain of Athos, the kalyve is subordinate to the Serbian monastery of Hilandar, because it is built on land belonging to it.
Kalyve is one of the forms of Athonite monastic life, the simplest of them in terms of administrative structure, but also the most ascetic. Usually, only one monk resides in a kalyve, leading a hermit lifestyle and dedicating all his time to craftsmanship and prayer.
Currently, only one monk named Isaac lives in the kalyve of the Holy Archangels. He is engaged in handicrafts, producing incense and collecting herbs for teas and essential oils. These activities are his only source of income, which he uses to try and restore his kalyve, which is in a semi-ruined state.
