The guardian angel is the personal protector and guardian of every human being. He stands constantly beside us, next to our right hand, supporting us and guiding us toward actions that are pleasing to God.
Pure, sinless, and benevolent, the guardian angel inspires human heart with righteousness and wisdom. The Holy Fathers of our Church teach us that the presence of a guardian angel is essential and indispensable, as it is a gift from God and a source of spiritual support throughout our earthly life.
Moreover, the guardian angel does not merely stand at our side, protecting and watching over our soul. He becomes deeply united with our spiritual life, sharing in our struggles and experiences. For this reason, he also grieves over our falls into sin, as the condition of our inner world touches him as well.
Does a Guardian Angel Ever Leave Us?
When a person persistently gives themselves over to the evil, behaving unjustly and choosing a life contrary to God's commandments, their guardian angel may cease to stand beside them. The angel bears no responsibility for their actions. Instead, he leaves the individual to follow their own path by their own free will.
Given the permission of God, the guardian angel continually seeks to protect us from temptations and sins, guiding our steps toward salvation. However, he does not override our freedom of choice. If we willingly choose to follow a path other than the one shown to us by Christ, the guardian angel respects that decision and does not force us to act against our will.
How Does the Guardian Angel Lead a Person to Salvation?
The guardian angel remains with a person throughout their entire earthly life. He is present in times of sorrow, offering comfort and support, guiding the individual toward repentance, and protecting them from both visible and invisible enemies.
In addition to the guardian angel, the Lord sends other angels as well, in order to assist and support each person throughout their life. Through their grace and intercessions, individuals are often delivered from countless temptations and dangers. The guardian angel stands beside us in our spiritual struggles, laboring with us and helping us in our journey toward God.
Moreover, he remains with our soul at the moment of death. He accompanies us on our passage to the eternal life, defending our spirit against demonic powers and strengthening it on the path toward the Kingdom of Heaven.
According to the Orthodox Christian tradition, the guardian angel also intercedes before the Lord at the Final Judgment, praying for mercy and forgiveness on behalf of the person entrusted to his care.
Thus, the guardian angel is an inseparable companion of the human person, accompanying them from the moment of Baptism into eternity.
When Does a Person Receive Their Guardian Angel?
People often wonder whether the guardian angel is given to a human being at the moment of conception in the womb, at birth, or at baptism.
According to the Holy Scriptures and the Tradition of the Church, the guardian angel accompanies a person from the moment of baptism. This holy sacrament is understood as the spiritual rebirth of the individual, through which one is clothed in Christ and filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit. With the cleansing from sin and the incorporation into the Church, the guardian angel is also assigned to the person, becoming their protector and helper.
The duration of this “ministry” is clearly affirmed in the sacred texts, as it is said that the guardian angel is given to the human being “forever.”
The Apostle Paul’s Reference
In the Epistle to the Hebrews, the Apostle Paul writes:
“To which of the angels did God ever say, ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?’
Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
[Heb. 1:13–14]
The Apostle Paul speaks of God’s angels, who, although they surpass human beings in their spiritual condition, are nevertheless sent to serve them as “ministering spirits.” Their presence is considered a great help and a means of spiritual support in times of difficulty. Through their power, Christians are often delivered from many sins and spiritual troubles that they are unable to foresee.
It is also believed that guardian angels are not only assigned to individuals, but also to cities, villages, monasteries, and all places that glorify the name of God.
Do Unbaptized People Have a Guardian Angel?
Those who have not been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ are considered not to have a guardian angel. Likewise, guardian angels are not attributed to those who have embraced a heresy or to those who have renounced the faith and declare themselves atheists.
In these cases, the guardian angel is said to withdraw, since he is entirely devoted to the truth and the love of Christ.
Prayer to the Guardian Angel
O angel of God, my holy guardian, given to me from heaven, enlighten me this day, and save me from all evil. Instruct me in doing good deeds, and set me on the path of salvation. Amen.
O angel of Christ, holy guardian and protector of my soul and body, forgive me of everything I have done to offend you every day, and protect me from all influence and temptation of the evil one. May I never offend God by my sin. Pray for me to the Lord, that He may make me worthy of the grace of the All-holy Trinity, and of the Most Blessed Theotokos, and of all the Saints. Amen.
