WHY DO WE CALL IT "AKATHISTOS"?
Regarding the name of the hymn, as it is mentioned in the Synaxarion:
«at that night, all people were standing upright singing the hymn to the Mother of God and, instead of sitting as they used to do in all other hymns, in this case they all stood up and listened».
Therefore, it is called "akathist" (from the Greek word "α-κάθισις", which means "without-sitting"), as it is chanted in an upright position, thus expressing the deep gratitude to Our Lady.

HISTORY AND COMPOSITION OF THE AKATHIST HYMN
Regarding the composition and history of the hymn, different explanations are offered. According to tradition, the Akathist Hymn is attributed to Romanos the Melodist, one of the most important hymn writers of our church, who lived in the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century. Although there are different versions concerning of the creation of the hymn, most scholars seem to identify its musical greatness, as well as the poetic and theological richness of the lyrics, with this particular hymnographer.
As far as its history is concerned, tradition traces the establishment of the Akathist Hymn back to the 7th century, precisely to the 626 AD. According to historical sources, in that year the Emperor Heraclius was on a military campaign away from Constantinople. Chronic conflicts with the Persians had led to their predominance in many regions of the Byzantine Empire, as well as to the retreat of the Byzantine frontiers. The military conflicts were risen when the Persians invaded Palestine and captured a high number of Christians, including Patriarch Zacharias. They even didn't hesitate to seize the Holy Cross from Palestine. In view of these events, the emperor launched a campaign against King Chosroes, which seemed to go well, making Heraclius victorious.
In an attempt to turn the tide of battles, Chosroes decided to create a diversion by allying with the Avars. With a multitude of ships, they attacked Constantinople from the sea; simultaneously, the troops attacked from the land. The capital of Byzantium seemed unprotected and absolutely unprepared for such a battle. As the city's military forces were diminished, Patriarch Sergius carried the icon of the Theotokos of Blachernae along the fortress walls of the city, praying for Her blessing and protection. There are testimonies that the great storm then rose in the sea, forcing the Avars to retreat. Others claim that the figure of Our Lady appeared, encouraging Byzantine soldiers and preventing Avars from attacking.
After the victory and the rescue of Constantinople, people gathered in the church of Panagia Vlaherna, where they chanted the Akathist Hymn, thanking the Mother of God for deliverance "from woes" and "from all danger".

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE AKATHIST HYMN
Exceeding the individual characteristics and historical origins of the Akathist Hymn, it is importante to notice the beauty and the spiritual background of the verses. The word "Rejoice" that we exclaim, highlights our ontological relationship with the Kingdom of God, as well as with Virgin Mary. It showcases her presence in our lives and our relationship with her. The Mother of God stands before us and receives our greetings with gentleness and joy. Moreover, as it is written in a manuscript of the Holy Monastery of Iviron on Mount Athos, where the icon of Theotokos Portaitissa is located, the Mother of God appeared many times to the Saints, saying:
«As I am exceedingly fond of the 24 oikoi of that beautiful hymn, I will love, protect, secure and guard against all evil, all Christians who greet me with these hymns once a day, and seek to live according to the law of God. And in the last day of their life, I will defend them before my Son»

Seeing a strange childbirth, let us estrange ourselves from the world by transporting our minds to Heaven; to this end the Most High God appeared on earth a lowly man, that He might draw to the heights those who cry out to Him:
