Victor Matveev

Martyr Victor Matveyevich Matveyev was born on October 11, 1871, in the city of Borovichi, Nizhny Novgorod Province. In his youth, he was paralyzed and was healed by St. John of Kronstadt. He traveled throughout Russia and in 1906 settled on Mount Gorelnik, where he built a cell and began a life of asceticism. He possessed the gift of the Jesus Prayer and discernment; he often visited the Nikolskaya Church in Verny. In 1935, he was arrested and sentenced to 5 years of exile. In 1937, he was arrested again, accused of 'counter-revolutionary activities.' He was shot on December 31, 1937. He was glorified by the Archierarchical Jubilee Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in the year 2000.
