Victor Marselsky
Martyr
Martyr Victor of Marseille (c. 290 AD) was an officer in the Roman army who, during the persecution of Emperor Maximian, encouraged the Christians of Marseille and urged them to bravely confess the Christian faith. Condemned for denouncing the service to idols, he was dragged through the streets of the city and thrown into prison. In prison, he converted three soldiers to Christ: Longinus, Alexander, and Felician, who were executed. Saint Victor himself was crushed under a millstone, 'like wheat chosen by God.' Later tradition asserts that before serving in the legions, he was a sailor-steersman in Marseille, and on this basis, he is venerated as the patron of fishermen and sailors.
