Venerable Vassian and Jonah were monks of the Solovetsky Transfiguration Monastery and disciples of the holy igumen Philip. In 1561, they were sent to build a cathedral church. During their return to the monastery, they were caught in a storm and drowned in the Northern Dvina. However, the Lord glorified them after their death, as their bodies did not decay on the seabed.
The holy relics of Vassian and Jonah were found and buried by Christians on the eastern shore of the Unskaya Gulf. In 1599, they appeared to the elder Mamont of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, who erected a chapel over their graves. In 1623, hieromonk Jacob founded a monastery, which was named Pertomin, and a church was built in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God. The memory of the venerable ones is celebrated twice a year: on June 5/18 - the finding of the holy relics and on June 12/25.
