Vasily Zavgorodniy, presbyter

Vasily Nazarovich Zavgorodny was born in 1893 in the village of Khizhki, in the Chernihiv region. He served as a priest until 1937, when he was arrested on charges of involvement in terrorist activities and anti-Soviet propaganda. He consistently denied all accusations and never admitted guilt.

He was executed on December 2, 1937, and buried in an unmarked mass grave at the Bugrovskoye Cemetery in Gorky.

In 2000, he was glorified as a saint by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church.
