Saint Martyr Vasily Georgievich Spassky was born in 1878 in the Kozmodemyanskoye parish of Tver district, Tver province, in a priest's family. After graduating from the Theological Seminary, he was ordained a priest and served in the churches of the Tver diocese. In 1929, he was arrested and sentenced to 6 months of imprisonment and a fine. In 1931, he was arrested again on charges of 'counter-revolutionary agitation' and sentenced to 3 years of exile. After returning in 1934, he served in the Transfiguration Church in the village of Kholokholnya near the city of Staritsa. On January 2, 1938, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Zubtsov city prison. He did not admit his guilt in the charges brought against him. The troika of the NKVD of the Kalinin region decided to execute the priest on December 31, 1937, even before his arrest. Priest Vasily Spassky was shot on January 5, 1938. He was glorified by the Archierarchical Jubilee Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in the year 2000.
