Saint Basil lived during the reign of Ivan III of Russia. He was born and raised in a devout family. From an early age, he was taught the principles of Christianity and felt great love for God.
He soon decided to leave his worldly life in order to devote himself to spiritual struggles. He subjected himself to extreme asceticism, remaining naked and wandering without any shelter. His life was filled with trials, which he endured in his effort to purify his soul and body. Full of humility, he concealed his virtues from others, presenting himself as a fool for Christ.
The Tsar quickly learned of his reputation and holy life. Therefore, he decided to approach him together with his wife, Anastasia, in order to receive his blessing. At the age of eighty-eight, the saint spoke to them prophetically, indicating their son Feodor as the heir to the throne.
After his repose, his body exuded myrrh. Crowds began to gather to venerate his holy relic, while the Tsar and the princes carried it with great honor.
His funeral took place on August 2, 1552. Since then, there have been reported numerous miracles. In 1586, a church was built in his honor, while his relics are still preserved there.
